SS25 - DROP 2 - "U8 - HOME OF THE BRAVE"

Many people are already familiar with the abbreviation U8 - Berlin’s subway line with arguably the worst reputation of all. Some well-known newspapers call it “Berlin’s Bermuda Triangle of Drugs” or simply the “Drug Store.” And for good reason: drug dealing, drug use, and all that comes with it are a daily reality on and around the U8. For passengers, it’s an unsettling experience. For Berliners, it’s just another day.

With the “U8 – Home of the Brave” drop, we want to shed light on both sides of this underground world - the daily commuters and those who live, hustle, and survive in the shadows of the U8.

-

So why do we call the U8 passengers brave?

Anyone who regularly takes the U8 quickly becomes numb to its realities. But objectively speaking, it takes a good amount of courage to board this subway line. The chances of being approached by beggars or enduring an almost unbearable smell are close to 100% on any given ride. Whether it's an addict collecting money for their next high, homeless people begging for food or cash, or organized gangs sending young women with children—it’s all part of the daily routine.

Most of the time, these encounters remain harmless. But there are also cases where beggars lose control, shouting or even threatening passengers who refuse to give them anything. Everyone has their own story.

So how do passengers prepare for a ride on the U8? First, it takes a certain level of mental resilience. Many put on headphones, creating a barrier that signals they are not open to interactions. Hoodies, caps, and sunglasses add another layer of anonymity. It’s all part of an unspoken strategy - one that turns simple commuters into urban survivors.

The Other Side of the U8: Why They Are Brave Too

While the passengers of the U8 navigate their daily commutes, there’s another group of people whose reality is far more brutal. The addicts, the homeless, the beggars, the hustlers, the dealers—they are all part of the underground ecosystem that gives the U8 its notorious reputation.

For them, every day is a battle. A battle for survival. A battle against hunger, addiction, and the unforgiving streets of Berlin. Sleeping on cold concrete, constantly being moved on by police, facing rejection, disgust, or even violence from passersby—it takes resilience to keep going.

The beggars on the U8 ask for money not because they want to, but because they have to. Some are trapped in addiction, some have lost everything, some are part of organized networks they can't escape from. The dealers know the risks they take—one mistake, one wrong move, and they could lose their freedom. And yet, they still show up every day, navigating the unwritten rules of the underground.

It’s easy to look away, to pretend they don’t exist. But the reality is: surviving like this takes a different kind of bravery. A brutal, relentless kind.

One more thing. Also good things happen every day in the U8 and for us the U8 is and remains an endless source of inspiration.

SS25 - DROP 2 - "U8 Home of the Brave" will launch on Friday, March 28th, 6PM CET.
